What Materials Do I Need To Make a Fence?
Making a fence, as you’ve probably guessed is not that hard. All you really need is a whole lot of wood. And while wood is pretty common, there are a lot of options to choose from. In some cases, material other than wood may also be used. Here are all the different kinds of materials you can use to craft fences and where you can find them:
1. Oak Wood
The oak is the most common kind of wood found in Minecraft, as it was the first kind of wood introduced in Minecraft. It can be found abundantly on trees when you first load up your survival world. The block is brown in color and yields a light brown color when converted into planks.
2. Birch Wood
The second type of wood introduced to Minecraft, birch is easily noticeable thanks to its bright white color with the occasional dark spots. They are mostly found in the birch and tall birch forests, but some are also found in the wild, amongst the common oak tree. They can also be found in dark forests. Birch planks have the same color as sand.

What material you go for is purely your choice, as the only thing to consider among all the wooden options is the color palette.
At any rate, here’s what you’ll need to craft a wooden fence and its recipe. Keep in mind that the planks must be of the same type of wood:

Setting Up your Fence Barrier

Simply equip the fence block in your hand from your inventory and use the right-click on your mouse, tap the screen on the Pocket Edition, or the left trigger on your controller (L2 on PlayStation, LT on Xbox, ZL on Switch) to set the fence block down. Wooden fences cannot connect with netherite fences.

Crafting a Fence Gate
When you’re done setting up your fence, you’ll need an easy entry and exit point since jumping over the fence is not an option. For this you can craft a fence gate. A fence gate acts as both a door and a fence. To craft one, you’ll need the same materials you used to craft a normal wooden fence; albeit in different quantities. This time, you’ll need 4 sticks and 2 wooden planks. There is no netherite gate fence variant.
Once you’ve made the gate, it’s time to add it to your fence barrier. Destroy one fence block at the point where you want the gate to be to make room for it. Next, use the right-click, left trigger or tap wherever you want the gate to be, to add the gate. To open or close the gate, you’ll have to tap on it, or use the right-click or left trigger.
