What is causing the 0x87e105dc Xbox Error Code?

We investigated this particular issue by looking at various user reports and the repair strategy that most affected users deployed to get to the bottom of this issue. Based on what we discovered, there are several common culprits that are known to trigger this particular error message:

  • An Xbox Live server fault – As several users have confirmed, this particular error can be beyond your control. Several affected users have posted online that they received the 0x87e105dc error code as a result of a critical Xbox Live service being down. In this particular case, the issue is beyond your control, so there’s no fix but to wait on Microsoft to fix the issue.
  • Xbox Live can’t verify the status of your digital game downloads – If a network fault is preventing the Xbox live service to verify your digital game licenses, you might also see this error code. In this case, a potential solution is to set your account as primary on the console (Home console).
  • Pending firmware update – As a lot of users have confirmed, this particular error can get thrown in those situations where the console is not running with the latest firmware. The obvious solution here is to install the latest update and reboot your console.
  • Bad cached data – Several users have reported that for them the issue went away after they performed a hard reset on their Xbox One console. This seems to suggest that some badly cached data might also trigger this particular issue.
  • Corrupted Microsoft profile – Another popular fix for this particular issue is to sign out & in of the user profile. Affected users speculate that the error code might get thrown as a result of a glitch.
  • Incorrect Alternate MAC address – If you’re encountering this issue only with multiplayer games, chances are the issue is caused by an incorrect alternate MAC address. Clearing its data should resolve the issue in this case.

If you’re currently struggling to resolve this particular error message, this article will provide you with a selection of verified troubleshooting steps that other users in a similar situation have also used.  For the best results, follow the potential fixes in the order that they are presented.

One of the fixes below should resolve the issue or at least allow you to identify what triggers the error code.

Method 1: Verifying the status of the Xbox Live servers

Before you try any other fix, it’s important to ensure that the Xbox Live Core Services are not causing the issue. More often than not,  the 0x87e105dc error was caused by a problem with the Xbox Live servers.

Luckily, checking the status of the Xbox Live services is extremely easy. All you have to do is visit this guide (here) and check if any core services are affected.

Verifying the status of the Xbox live services

If the Xbox Live service is down, you get around the 0x87e105dc error and play digitally downloaded games by setting your console as Home for your account. Here’s a quick guide on how to do this:

  1. Press the Xbox button and navigate to the Settings menu, then choose All settings.
    Accessing the Settings menu
  2. Inside the Settings menu, go to the Personalization tab, then move over to the right pane and select My home Xbox.
Accessing the My home Xbox setting
  3. If the current account is not set as primary, you’ll have the option to make this the home Xbox (which is what we’re looking to do). To do this, simply click on Make this my home Xbox. That’s it, you should now be able to play your digitally downloaded games

If the status page doesn’t reveal any inconsistencies with the Microsoft Live services, you can probably eliminate a server issue from the list and move down to the next method below.

Method 2: Testing the internet connection

The second potential culprit you should investigate is your own network connection.  This particular issue can also occur if your internet connection is improper and the Live feature can’t verify your game’s licenses.

Even if your network connectivity seems to be alright, an improperly assigned gateway might confuse the Xbox live service from verifying your game licenses. Here’s a quick guide on how to verify the Internet connection on your Xbox:

  1. Press the Xbox button to open the guide menu. Then, navigate to the Settings icon and access the All Settings menu.
Accessing the Settings menu on Xbox One
  2. In the Settings screen, go down to the Network tab and choose Network settings.
    Accessing the Network settings
  3. Inside the Network window, move over to the Troubleshooting tab and click on Test network connection.
Accessing the Test network connection menu on Xbox One
  4. If the test reveals that you have a connection problem, follow this support link (here) to take the appropriate steps according to the error you receive.

Once the recommended repair strategy has been applied, reboot your console once again and see if the issue is resolved at the next startup.

If you’re still encountering the same error code when launching a game or application, move down to the next method below.

Note: While you’re on this screen, make sure that your NAT Type is set to Open (under Current Network Status)

Method 3: Installing the pending update

Another fairly common reason why you might encounter this issue is that of a pending update that needs to be addressed. If we’re talking about a pending firmware update, then it’s very likely that you will not be able to access your collection of digital games or play online until you make the transition to the latest version.

Several users encountering the same error code have reported that the problem was resolved as soon as they installed the console update.

If you don’t see any pending update, restart your console and see if the update pops up on your console. If an update notification doesn’t pop up on your screen, follow the next instructions:

  1. Make sure your console is connected to the internet and press the Xbox button to open the guide menu. Then, go to the settings icon to access the Settings menu.
Accessing the Settings menu on Xbox One
  2. In the Settings menu, go to the System tab, move over to the right-hand side menu and access the Updates menu.
    Accessing the Updates menu
  3. As soon as you access this menu, the system will check for an available update. If a newer version is found, you will be prompted to update.
  4. Follow the on-screen instruction to update to the latest version,  then restart the console and see if the issue has been resolved. If you’re still encountering the same issue, move down to the next method below.

Method 4: Performing a hard reset

A couple of users that we’re struggling to resolve this particular error message have reported that the error code was finally fixed after they performed a hard reset on the Xbox One console. This procedure is pretty easy to do:

Note: A hard reset will preserve all your data (application, saves, user preferences, etc). The only major difference from a normal restart/shutdown is that the cache is cleared and some settings related to some log-in/game start procedure are reverted.

To perform a hard reset, just hold the power button for 10 seconds while your system is on. During the first few seconds, your console will begin powering off (but keep holding the button pressed for the full amount).  When you power the console again, you will start seeing the green startup screen.

Perform a hard reset on Xbox One

Once your console boots back up from a hard reset, open the application or game that was previously triggering the 0x87e105dc error code and see if the issue has been resolved.

If you’re still encountering the same issue, move down to the next method below.

Method 5: Uninstalling & reinstalling profile

Several users that have been struggling to resolve this particular error code have reported that the issue was only resolved after signing out & in of their Microsoft account. Although it’ s not confirmed why this procedure is effective, several affected users speculate that some account related data gets cleared in this process.

Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Press the Xbox button and select the Settings icon. Then, move over to the right-hand menu and click on All settings.
    Accessing the Settings menu
  2. In the Settings menu, go over to the Account tab. Next, go over to the right-hand side menu and choose the Remove accounts.
    Accessing the Remove Accounts menu
  3. Select the account that you want to remove and confirm the removing process.
  4. When your console boots back up, log-in with your account again and see if the issue has been resolved.
    Signing in with an account

If you’re still encountering the 0x87e105dc error, move down to the final method.

Method 6: Clearing the Alternate Mac Address

If you’ve come this far without a result, one of the last things that you can try is to clear your Alternate MAC Address. A lot of users in a similar situation (this solution dates back for two years) have reported that the issue was resolved once they performed the steps down below.

This solution is typically reported to be successful if the user is encountering this issue while accessing one or two multiplayer games (not the whole suite of digitally downloaded games).

Here’s what you need to do to clear the Alternate MAC Adress of your Xbox One Console:

  1. Start by press the Xbox button to open the guide menu. Then, navigate to the Settings icon and access the All Settings menu.
Accessing the Settings menu on Xbox One
  2. In the Settings screen, go down to the Network tab and choose Network settings.
    Accessing the Network settings
  3. In the Network menu, access the Advanced settings menu.
Accessing the Advanced settings menu of the Network tab
  4. In the Advanced settings menu, go to the Alternate Mac address.
Accessing the Alternate MAC address menu
  5. In the Alternate Wired/Wireless MAC address menu, select Clear and then choose Restart to apply the changes.
Clearing the Alternate Wired MAC address

At the next startup, open the game or application that was previously triggering the 0x87e105dc and see if the issue is now resolved.
