Samsung to Supply Displays for iPhone 15 After BOE Fails to Meet Apple’s Requirements

Just moments away from iPhone 15’s launch, it has been reported that Apple had apparently sourced all of it’s iPhone OELD displays via Samsung Electronics. This now means that Samsung is now a huge beneficiary for the upcoming release.

Initially, Apple had contacted the Chinese firm, BOE for the display hardware to be used in the iPhone 15 series, but they failed to meet Apple’s own validation criteria, and in return, failed to secure orders. When the deadline for these orders closed in, the volume was immediately entrusted to Samsung.

It is unclear whether BOE will approve quality within the year, and there will likely be very little allocated volume this year, so it is understood that Samsung Display is, in fact, in charge of both general models.”

For Samsung, this was a clear win-win situation, since the supply of OLED also improved at the backend, making it easier for them to source, and manufacture the required components. Samsung put in almost 20% more orders for OLED, for the coming two months, when compared to August’s volume.

Specifically for the iPhone 15 series, we know that Samsung secured orders for LTPO (Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide) displays for the iPhone 15 Pro series, and for the remaining two, they went ahead with the slightly outdated LTPS (Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Silicon) tech. Keep in mind that the base variants (15 and 15 Plus) wouldn’t feature ProMotion.

Since this year, all of the iPhones would come equipped with Dynamic Island, BOE found it difficult to craft the pill shaped cutout (light leakage), and aside from that, Apple deemed the displays they produced as being subpar – not to mention the delay in production.

Now, Apple has two suppliers for the iPhone 15 – LG Display, for Pro models, and Samsung for all four. Technically, it’s Samsung alone since LG has only been given conditional approval for the 15 Pro, and a formal approval is pending for the 15 Pro Max. These numbers are important for Samsung since Apple plans on shipping almost north of 100 million devices by the end of this year alone.

This is all we know for now, but rest assured that we will keep you updated as new information becomes available.
