iPhone 15 Pro Comes in Titanium, Bids Farewell to the Lightning Port & Ringer Switch
Apple has just unveiled the new iPhone 15 Pro, which retains the same design from last year but, for all it’s qualities – is apparently the most pro(est) iPhone Apple has ever created.
The screen features the same Dynamic Island pill cutout; however, the bezels on the front have been shrunk while maintaining the same overall display size (6.1″ on the Pro and 6.7″ for the Pro Max).
For protection, Apple has used much stronger ceramic glass on the front, not to mention the highlight of the phone – a grade-5 titanium frame, the most rigid, durable, and premium feeling on any smartphone. As for the back, the glass is a single color, much stronger, and better for repairability.
On the performance front, Apple has changed the naming scheme for these phones, aligning them with the Mac lineup. The A17 “Pro” is Apple’s most powerful chipset to date, based on TSMC’s 3nm process, and features six total cores: two performance and four efficiency cores, paired with Apple’s own GPU. It promises a 10% improvement in performance cores and 2x faster neural engine.
The Mute switch is finally replaced by an Action button, marking another major change to the iPhone lineup. This button is reprogrammable, much like on the Watch Ultra, and can perform various tasks, such as acting as a camera shutter for taking selfies or serving as a snooze button. Out of the box, it will work like a normal ringer switch, though.
Finally, USB-C makes its way to the iPhones as we bid farewell to the Lightning port after eleven long years. This change means that you can use the same cable across all your Apple devices, which is a positive development.
The cherry on top? These Pros will be the first phones to have USB 3 transfer speeds of up to 10Gbps for transferring photos and videos. For comparison, the base variants of the iPhone 15 will be limited to 480Mbps, while the Pros will go as far as 10Gbps.
You do have a color-matched USB Type-C cable in the box, but Apple has limited this to 480Mbps, even for the Pro models. Perhaps the most disappointing aspect is that USB-C could have allowed Apple to increase charging speeds, but we’re still stuck with a subpar 20W charger.
The iPhone 15 Pro starts at $999 for the base 128GB model, and the Pro Max starts at $1199 (256GB) – a $100 bump for the base ‘Pro Max,’ but 128GB has totally been scrapped this time around. The phone is now available for pre-order and officially launches on the 22nd of September.
This year, Apple has been taking sustainability very seriously, spending almost north of 20 minutes in total talking about how the company has tried to reduce its impact on the natural environment.
