Honor 8X Contest on XDA Forums, Win 3 BT Speakers for Guessing Global Price

The official Honor account on the XDA forums opened a contest for users to guess the price of the latest Honor 8X 4+64GB version before its global release. The reason we’re posting about this contest is that it isn’t on the front page of XDA, or found anywhere in XDA’s news – it is purely a forum thread on the Honor section of the XDA forums that we spotted.

This contest runs until October 11th, and all users need to do is comment in the thread with their guess of the Honor 8X’s retail price on launch. Its pretty much The Price is Right for the Honor series.

To help users formulate a guess, Honor published some specs for the device. The Honor 8X 4+64GB version will feature:

  • 5-inch size with a 91% screen-to-body ratio
  • Kirin 710 SoC with GPU Turbo technology
  • 3750 MAH battery
  • 20+2MP camera
  • 4GB RAM + 64GB internal storage

There are already numerous reviews online for the Honor 8X, though nobody yet knows an exact price – it is likely these devices were given to reviewers specifically for that purpose. Numerous websites are speculating on the price, based on the fact the Honor 8X is already available in China for 1,399 Yuan ($203 USD).

Honor’s devices are always very slightly cheaper in its native China than they are abroad – the Honor 7x was released in China for 1,299 Yuan for example, or $189 USD – yet it costs $200 on most international websites such as Amazon. So if the Honor 8X is $203 USD in China, its very likely it will be no more than $219.99 USD when launched globally.

As far as reviews go, most reviewers are praising its all-new bezel-less design, metal trim, and notched display. As far as physical appearance goes, it’s a step up in the Honor series – in fact, the Honor 8X has more screen-to-body ratio than Huawei’s P20 flagship.

As far as the SoC goes, the Kirin 710 is a relatively mid-range SoC. It utilizes the powerful Cortex-A73 CPU cores, but the Mali-G51 GPU is pretty much in the lower range of things – thus, the Honor 8X is not really a “gaming” device. Games like Fortnite and PUBG will likely have around 30FPS on lower graphics settings.

One positive aspect of the Honor 8X, as noted by an AndroidAuthority review, is that the Honor 8X doesn’t come bundled with a lot of bloatware. Its pre-installed apps are mostly Google apps, with a handful of Honor tools like Game Suite, Mirror, Compass, and Themes. Its also running EMUI 8.2 on Android 8.1 Oreo.

The same review also noted that despite the camera being 20MP resolution with f/1.8 aperture, it has a few drawbacks. Notably, the “AI camera” that Honor likes to tout is a bit flawed, in that it seems to mostly just boost saturation, which can result in almost cartoonish images. Photography purists will surely hate this, as over-processed photos are the bane of camera enthusiasts.

In any case, the contest being ran by Honor on the XDA forums closed on October 11, so if you’re interested in possibly winning 3 Bluetooth speakers for simply posting a guesstimate, go ahead and sign up for the XDA forums and post your best guess. Our guess is around $212 USD global launch price for the Honor 8X, so if we win, we’ll be sure to update this article with sweet pictures of our new Bluetooth speakers.
